Employee Assistance Program
An employee assistance program (EAP) is a confidential service providing professional assistance to employees and their families. An EAP helps individuals manage personal problems that may affect job performance, while helping employers address employee emotional issues early on, before they manifest into disruptions in the workplace. EAPs deal with a spectrum of emotional issues that affect employees, from relationships to stress and anxiety. It can also be a critical management tool for employers, providing assistance in areas such as workplace trauma and management consultation.

What is an Employee Assistance Program?
An employee assistance program is a constellation of services made available by a company for the betterment of itself and its employees. Moore Counseling & Mediation Services, Inc.’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a confidential service providing professional assistance to employees and their families.
An EAP is a resource program that provides both preventative and remedial services. An EAP helps individuals manage personal problems that may affect job performance, while helping employers address employee emotional issues early on, before they manifest into disruptions in the workplace. An EAP differs from health insurance because an employee may receive EAP assistance without any medical, psychiatric or psychological diagnosis.
The EAP services are broad in nature and range from referrals to community networks to crisis intervention. EAP's deal with a spectrum of emotional issues that affect employees, from relationships to stress and anxiety, and it can also be a critical management tool for employers, providing assistance in areas such as workplace trauma and management consultation.
How do employees access EAP?
Our Employee Assistance Program's counseling sessions are completely confidential and free of charge to employees and their immediate family members. The person seeking assistance calls our local or toll free number. Our case managers gather information from the participant and make a referral to one of our clinicians in their local area. Our EAP allows your participant to present any problem as the reason for their contact. This flexibility is very effective in dealing with denial of the actual problem, which is often the case in addiction problems.

Why should supervisors encourage the use of an EAP?
Not only is the EAP helpful for employees seeking assistance on their own but is also a valuable tool for supervisors in dealing with difficult employees and their job related problems. Supervisors can use the EAP for referrals with employees whose personal problems impact their ability to function in the workplace. A supervisory referral can often assist in identifying and resolving the cause of the employee's problem.
Employees' personal and family problems may be revealed in job performance or workplace behavior. There may be a negative effect on work productivity. Supervisors are responsible for monitoring and directing employee activity, and are in a unique position to identify those employees whose work may be affected by personal or family problems. If the problems have become apparent, supervisors are obliged to inform the employee of the counseling resources available through the EAP. Using the EAP is voluntary but can be mandatory if the supervisor has adequate documentation and events to support such a referral. The process of recognizing problem situations and responding with an EAP referral is a normal and expected supervisory task. The supervisor's primary responsibility is to maintain a productive work environment and to promote employee development. Referral to the EAP helps accomplish both!
What to do in the event that someone has a substance abuse issue?
When employees test positive or come forward with a substance abuse problem the EAP can assist. Moore Counseling will conduct a through chemical dependency assessment, and make recommendations for treatment and/or education. The Licensed EAP Counselor will also follow-up with the treatment center to determine if the employee has complied with the all expectations and determine return to work status. Case management on the employee will continue for up to one year to determine if the employee has remained sober or is struggling with their sobriety.
